# South Africans who can get off Eskom’s grid and away from load shedding should do so as soon as possible. This is according to energy expert Ted Blom following another week of rotational load shedding and warnings that the system remains constrained:

Blom is calling on the government to incentivise and empower homeowners to at least partially generate their own energy. He says it will help productivity and make more, much-needed power available to the rest of the country:

He says financial institutions also have a role to play:

He says when consumers become more energy independent it does however create its own dilemma. Even though Eskom needs less pressure on the grid, the power utility will probably hike tariffs when the demand goes down:

Blom says the fact is load shedding will remain a reality for at least the next few years and consumers should prepare for it as much as possible:
